Smith Cup and Plate Finals Results
(L. to R. Joe Peckham, Harrison Emery, Alex Gubler) (L. to R. Chris Hart, John Le Warne, Steve King)

The Smith Cup and Plate Finals took place at Elstow TTC on Monday 24th April. The Smith Cup was won for the first time by the fast improving young Revolution E team who defeated Southill C by 75 points. 16 year old Joe Peckham, for Revolution, caused the most damage and got the team off to a good start beating John Le Warne 7, 4, 1 and 9. Southill C were giving away 42 points to Revolution so needed a good result from their second match between the experienced Chris Hart and Revolution's 11 year old Harrison Emery. However, Emery was to show an increasing maturity as he won 6, 10, -8 and 7 to increase Revolution's lead. Steve King, for Southill, managed to win back 12 points against Revolution's Alex Gubler winning 6, -9, 3 and 10 but the damage had been done and by the eighth game the Smith Cup was secured for Revolution E.

(L. to R. Dave Beddall (League Chairman), Ruth Hart, Rebekah Barry, Ian Drakes) (L. to R. John Alsop, Dave Beddall (League Chairman), Ian Baldock)

The Plate final was won comfortably by the Southill E team of (Ruth Hart, Rebekah Barry and Ian Drakes) against Revolution A giving away 316 points on the handicap. Having to keep Revolution down to 2.2 points a game, Ian Drakes managed to go two points up on the handicap against Steve Silk in the first match losing -3, -1, -3, -3. Ruth Hart took another two points off Ian Baldock losing -3, 0, -3, -4. John Alsop managed to level the difference against Rebekah Barry winning back four points 2, 0, 1, 1. However, Ian Drakes then put Southill ten points in front with a -5, -5, -2, -6 loss to Baldock. Rebekah Barry then put any chance of victory for Revolution out of the window by increasing the lead by another 11 points losing to Silk -4, -3, -5, -7. Alsop pulled back another point from Hart winning 1, 2, 3, 1 but it was all over by the seventh game as Barry played some great attacking shots against Baldock to lose -7, -2, -4, -4.

Congratulations to all teams for making the finals and thanks to Dave Beddall for organising the competition and presenting the trophies. A special thanks to Dave Thomas for his thorough work throughout the season working out individual handicaps, a very difficult job indeed. Lastly our thanks to Elstow and Simon Collier for hosting the semi-finals and finals nights.
