The handbook has been distributed to all but two clubs this week, the remaining two clubs will get their copies at the weekend. My apologies that this has taken so long this year but we have now secured the services of a larger printer so hopefully this will not happen again next year. Additional score cards will be distributed in the next few weeks.

This week saw the top two teams clash as last season's champions Revolution A travelled to Elstow. The match lived up to its billing as both teams traded blows to eventually play out a draw. Olivier Autin began the evening in fine form for Revolution despite this being his first match for some weeks and easily beat Colin Luscombe. Elstow were immediately on level pegging as Tom Nowakowski showed determination to maintain his unbeaten start to the season. In a fantastic match he finally overcame Steve Silk winning 11-6 in the deciding set. Dave Beddall then took on John Alsop and the pair seemed to have been transported back to the days when they first competed against each other and a game was the first to reach 21. Having lost the first set Dave pipped John in the second game 20-18 before going 2-1 up only for John to take it to a decider. This again went to deuce and Dave eventually triumphed 13-11. Olivier completed the evening by securing his hat-trick without dropping a set and Steve won his other two singles. Elstow's pairing of Nowakowski and Beddall then had to fight all the way against Silk and Autin in the doubles winning 12-10 in the fifth to round off the draw. Revolution B meanwhile hosted St Neots B and the second draw of the week resulted. Player of this match was undoubtedly Mike Perry who secured a first hat-trick of the season beating Dan Bullen and Zach Martillo in deciding sets and Luke Manning three straight. Martin Walters chipped in with a brace and only narrowly lost out to Luke 11-9 in the fifth. Trevor Beard had some close matches but was unable to get over the line against Dan Bullen in the decider. Martillo and Manning beat Walters and Perry in the doubles to secure the draw. The week's first victory went to Phoenix A who beat Marston 7-3. Mark Conway, Graham Green and Dante Laconte who played up from the lower team each bagged a brace, Graham narrowly missing his hat trick as he lost 12-10 in the 5th to Gerald Ridgway. Gerald came out the victor against Dante. Wackrill and Conway secured the doubles. Biggleswade won by the same score against St Neots A as Nick Hart completed his hat-trick and Richard Steele bagged a brace. Tim Bliss beat Richard Bellamy. Marek Mastalerczyk won two for St Neots and Mick Gaunt beat Tim Bliss. Steele and Hart won the doubles beating Mastalerczyk and Bellamy.

The two Revolution teams met each other at Lincroft with the A team securing a 9-1 victory aided by the B team only fielding two players. The continued improvement over the summer of Martin Walter's game enabled him to pick up the B team's point as he beat Henry Simmons and Ian Baldock stretched John Alsop all the way with the latter needing a deciding set to clinch victory. Elstow A travelled to Marston and made it two wins from two matches played securing an 8-2 score line. Tom Nowakowski was the star of the night as he battled to secure his hat-trick in an excellent encounter with Mike Wilkins. His powerful top spin and hitting saw him take the decider 11-3. Earlier in the evening he had been pushed all the way in another close match with Gerald Ridgway just nudging the game 11-8 in the 5th. There were two wins each for Dave Beddall and Colin Luscombe. Mike Wilkins secured the two points for Marston. St Neots A overcame its opening day defeat with a resounding 8-2 win at home to Phoenix. Mick Gaunt and Marek Mastalerczyk secured hat-tricks and combined to take the doubles against Graham Green and Mark Conway who in turn both picked up a singles win against Rob Adamson. Please ensure you complete score cards correctly including the FULL NAME of the player. (Revolution C: Martin Walters, Trevor Beard, Josh Hallam)

(Phoenix C: Alan Walden, John Craddock, Mick Buckhurst)

The finals of the Smith Cup and Plate handicapped competition took place at Elstow TTC on Monday 18th April.

The final of the Cup competition was between Division 3 sides Revolution C and Phoenix C, with bottom team Phoenix C having a 24 point start. The Revolution side of Martin Walters, Trevor Beard and Josh Hallam came out very strongly in the first few games and had soon eradicated the handicap difference. The Phoenix team of Alan Walden, John Craddock and Mick Buckhurst came back with some strong performances but were not quite able to find the superb form that had got them into the final. Revolution C won the match by 23 points.

(Southill C: Philip Smith, Steve Dance, Russell Nicholson)

(Bedford CTTC C: Harve Swamynathan, Pete Wood, Tim Kirby)

The Plate final was between this seasonís Division 4 winners, Southill D, and the Division 3 team Bedford Community C. The Bedford Community team of Tim Kirby, Harve Swamynathan and Pete Wood had a 45 handicap start and defended this lead well in the first 16 games of the match. In the later stages, the experienced Southill side of Philip Smith, Russell Nicholson and Steve Dance began to claw back the deficit and with 8 games to go had drawn level, eventually winning by 33 points.

Congratulations must go to all the teams that reached the later stages of this yearís competition and to the eventual winners. Thank you to all the teams that took part, and thank you to Elstow Table Tennis Club for hosting the semi-finals and finals again this year.
