St Neots B picked up a 6-4 victory at Elstow on Monday thanks to a hat-trick from Zach Martillo. Dave Tiplady bagged a brace beating Dave Beddall in five and losing in the decider to Colin Luscombe. The win was secured in the doubles as Tiplady and Martillo beat Luscombe and Beddall 11-8 in the fifth. At the beginning of the evening Dan Bullen had taken Dave all the way only to succumb to a 12-10 defeat in the decider. Marston hosted Revolution B and secured an 8-2 win with hat-tricks for Mike Wilkins and Dave Wackrill. Mo Duncan picked up an unexpected singles win against Ian Baldock. Trevor Beard and Mike Perry both beat Mo to score Revolution's points. Biggleswade picked up a 7-3 win against Phoenix A with a hat-trick for Nick Hart, a brace for Richard Steele and a singles win for Clint Armstrong against Graham Green. Tim Kirby picked up an excellent win beating Richard 14-12 in the decider for Phoenix and Mark Conway beat Clint also in the fifth. The doubles saw Steele and Armstrong beat Green and Conway. Revolution A v St Neots A was conceded by St Neots A due to unavailability of players.

Sadly the League has lost one of its elder statesmen as former official, player and coach Sandy Cordon, at the age of ninety, passed away peacefully at home after a short illness on Christmas Day. He was a much loved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather. Sandy was very well known within the League as a player, coach and administrator. His contribution as Fixture Secretary over twenty years, until his retirement from the post in 2010, is one that will probably never be repeated but he ensured a smooth handover to his successor by staying on the committee for another season. He also ran very successful Charity Tournaments over the years using his impeccable handicapping system which took advantage of his unprecedented detailed knowledge of player performance from memory without the aid of a computer. As Fixture Secretary, everyone that dealt with him found him easy to deal with and fair in his decisions, even if they didn't agree with the result! Every week during the season he would produce handwritten results for inclusion in the local newspaper, only he knows how long this took him. As a committee member, he would put forward all the options he could foresee and then let others discuss these before putting forward his own view, if he felt it necessary. As a player he would admit he wasn't the best but he was a fierce competitor with an 'unorthodox serve' that took some skill returning. For even longer than his service to the League Sandy served his club Elstow, as their secretary, until ill health required him to step down in 2011. In the same year, in recognition of his life long service to the League, Sandy was elected a Life Member. A former mathemetics teacher, he also had a keen interest in chess and rose to be President of the British Chess Federation and, whilst deputy head at Stewartby School, in the 1970s he organised the Bedford Middle Schools Chess League where he used to have 100 children in his lunchtime chess club. Outside table tennis he played hockey in the 1950's for Bedford Hockey and into his 80's was still enjoying playing tennis, badminton and golf until cataracts prevented him from playing any further. He and his wife Edna celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year and our condolences go to her and the rest of his loving family. His amazingly full life will be celebrated at Bedford Crematorium on Friday 13th January at 10.00am. Flowers from family only please. Donations, if desired, may be made to Cancer Research.

I have great pleasure inviting you to enter the Bedford & District League annual table tennis tournament to be held on Saturday 21st January 2017 in the Sports Hall, Lincroft School, Station Road, Oakley MK43 7RE. Last year's tournament was an outstanding success and all players are invited to enter if they are registered in the League and have played at least one match. The closing date for entries is Saturday 14th January 2017.

If you would like to enter then this can be done on-line by clicking annual tournament entry and entering your selected events. Once you have submitted your entry form you will receive an acknowledgement email which will contain payment instructions. Alternatively, you can use the entry form in the handbook. Please send your payment through as soon as possible so that you can be entered into the event schedule. A few days before the tournament date you will receive details of the draw and your start time.

Please note that I will not be accepting entries other than via the annual tournament entry website link or the handbook entry form as last year some players were disappointed because they thought an email or text was sufficient to guarantee entry.

I look forward to seeing you there.

The Smith Cup results are now on the website. Our thanks to Dave Thomas for producing the individual handicaps again. The closest match was Revolution D v Phoenix C which ended in a draw after thirteen year old Ram Dinakar lost to the slightly older Alan Walden 6-11, 8-11, 6-11, 7-11 in the last match! Under the rules the last game was replayed with Dinaker playing more aggressively and taking home an extra two points to win the match.

It was honours even all round at the beginning of the week as Revolution B and Phoenix A played out a draw which also sees them level on points in the table at Christmas. The doubles secured the draw for Revolution as Walters and Perry beat Green and Conway in the decider. Nick Hart picked up his hat-trick for Biggleswade although was taken to a decider by Colin. Beddall and Luscombe combined to win the doubles. Playing on the adjacent table against St Neots B, Revolution A maintained its eight point advantage at the top with a win by the same margin. John Alsop picked up his hat-trick and Keith McConnell bagged a brace as he lost only his second singles match this season in a narrow five set defeat against Zach Martillo. Martin Walters, playing up from Revolution B, beat John Mitchell. McConnell and Alsop took the doubles against Martillo and Luke Manning. Elstow A's 8-2 victory against Revolution B told nothing of the story of the night as six of the singles needed a decider to produce a result. Dave Beddall secured his hat-trick and there was a brace each for Tom Nowakowski and Colin Luscombe. Richard Elliott playing his second game of the season picked up two wins for Revolution beating Tom and Colin. Nowakowski and Beddall beat Walters and Baldock in the doubles. Despite having only two players, Biggleswade secured a 6-4 victory against Marston with a hat-trick from Richard Steele and a brace from Tim Bliss. Marston's singles victory came from Mike Wilkins. Revolution A extended its lead at the top with a maximum against Phoenix A. Mark Conway managed to take a set from John Alsop, Keith McConnell and Steve Silk but other than the doubles the remaining games were all settled in straight sets. Finally, there was a St Neots derby resulting in victory for its B team 7-3 against its A team fielding only two players. Zach Martillo beat both Marek Mastalerczyk and Richard Bellamy. Dan Bullen picked up a singleton beating Richard whilst Marek and Richard both beat John Mitchell.

This season has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of score cards that are being submitted without team names. Other issues experienced have been teams entering just christian names. This all adds to the work of the volunteer administrators and fixture secretary. If you wish to keep the goodwill of these people and continue to have a responsive results service then please complete the score cards correctly. Sanctions against offending teams are not currently under discussion by the committee but if standards continue to drop then this will have to be reviewed. In addition, the quality of the images sent electronically has generally been poor. Images should be at least 1024 pixels wide and taken in good lighting conditions i.e. on the match table top without shadows and in focus. Thank you for your assistance in helping the league run efficiently and professionally albeit by amateur volunteers.

John Alsop
General Secretary

Elstow picked up the doubles as Nowakowski and Luscombe beat McConnell and Alsop. Phoenix A travelled to Marston and left with a 7-3 victory as Tim Kirby, Mark Conway and Graham Green all bagged a brace. Graham secured an impressive straight sets victory against the experienced Mike Wilkins. Mike won his other two singles for Marston and Jiten Pitamber beat Graham. St Neots A and Biggleswade played out a draw with a brace for both Marek Mastalerczyk and Rob Adamson who needed a decider to beat Richard Steele.
