(Phoenix C: Alan Walden, John Craddock, Mick Buckhurst)

The finals of the Smith Cup and Plate handicapped competition took place at Elstow TTC on Monday 18th April.

The final of the Cup competition was between Division 3 sides Revolution C and Phoenix C, with bottom team Phoenix C having a 24 point start. The Revolution side of Martin Walters, Trevor Beard and Josh Hallam came out very strongly in the first few games and had soon eradicated the handicap difference. The Phoenix team of Alan Walden, John Craddock and Mick Buckhurst came back with some strong performances but were not quite able to find the superb form that had got them into the final. Revolution C won the match by 23 points.

(Southill C: Philip Smith, Steve Dance, Russell Nicholson)

(Bedford CTTC C: Harve Swamynathan, Pete Wood, Tim Kirby)

The Plate final was between this seasonís Division 4 winners, Southill D, and the Division 3 team Bedford Community C. The Bedford Community team of Tim Kirby, Harve Swamynathan and Pete Wood had a 45 handicap start and defended this lead well in the first 16 games of the match. In the later stages, the experienced Southill side of Philip Smith, Russell Nicholson and Steve Dance began to claw back the deficit and with 8 games to go had drawn level, eventually winning by 33 points.

Congratulations must go to all the teams that reached the later stages of this yearís competition and to the eventual winners. Thank you to all the teams that took part, and thank you to Elstow Table Tennis Club for hosting the semi-finals and finals again this year.

Revolution TTC will once again be running its Summer League which was enjoyed by everyone who competed last year. This year we will be running the league over two evenings commencing 9th/10th May. Whilst nothing is yet set in concrete the plan is for the Monday evening to encompass the higher division(s) and the Tuesday the lower division(s). Teams will consist of two players playing two singles and one doubles with matches commencing at 8.00pm. The cost will be £3 per player and the home team must provide their own plastic match ball. Match balls can be purchased on the evening at £1 per ball. All players must have a Table Tennis England Player Membership Number before they play which can be purchased from Table Tennis England (£5 for juniors and £10 for seniors).

Interested in putting in a team? If so, then send an email to John Alsop at alsop.john@btinternet.com giving your team name and list of players. Teams will be allowed to enter a MAXIMUM of five player names per team. If teams require an emergency stand-in player(s) then this/these player(s) will be allocated by the organiser at his/her discretion from available players of similar standard on the evening. Where a team cannot fulfill its obligations in terms of providing a full team and the organiser cannot find substitute players of a similar standard then that team must forfeit the individual matches concerned and pay the £3 fee for each player that is unable to play.

Bedford League were well represented in the Eastern Region Qualification competition for the National Regional finals to be held later this year in Kettering. Ben Baguley (U15), Luke Manning (U13), Sam Manning (U11) and Tom Nicol (U11) travelled down to BATTS Harlow for an intense set of matches. Ben, Sam and Tom found the competition very strong but this was a new experience for most of the boys and has given them something to think about with regards to the areas they need to work on. Bedfordshire No. 1 cadet Luke Manning (no relation to Sam) who plays for St Neots in Division Two had an excellent day and won the U13 boy's event and qualified for the finals only losing one match all day and that was 11-8 in the fifth.
