The last Revolution TTC summer league event takes place this evening on Tuesday 1st July. The last few weeks have seen handicap, individual and doubles knockout tournaments taking place with Chris Hart usually taking the top position each week closely followed by his wife Ruth, and cadets Josh Hallam or Ben Baguley. The other positions are fiercely fought over with several deuce in the fifth finishes for Barbara Wright, Cate Thomas, Alan Gobey and Richard Harper. Julia Newton continues to show promise in her second season of playing competitive table tennis and cadets Rebekah and Jacob Barry continue to impress. Last week John Alsop, returning from a hand operation, joined in and knocked Chris off the top spot for the first time so who is going to triumph tonight?

Further to the committee meeting on Monday 30th June, the committee have decided that in the interests of playing on level terms and also depleting existing stock that the ball to be used next season will be celluloid based and not the new plastic ball. The following 2015/16 season it is mandatory to use the new plastic ball, therefore, clubs should provision accordingly.

The ITTF has decided that the new plastic ball will be introduced in ITTF competitions from July 1, 2014. The ETTU has recently confirmed the mandatory use of the plastic ball in all ETTU competition from September 1, 2014. As a matter of principle Table Tennis England supports the decision and will be introducing the new plastic ball this coming season.

We wish to accommodate our players across the membership spectrum, be sensitive to the logistics of all those who are planning for next season, while not disadvantaging our elite athletes who will also be competing at the highest level here and abroad. We all recognise, along with other national associations, that this will be a transitional year.

As such, and following discussion with domestic competition committees, other European nations and equipment distributors, Table Tennis England intends to introduce the new plastic ball in the following competitions from August 1, 2014.

National Championships (senior, junior, cadets regional qualifiers optional) and Grand Prix events.

We understand that a reasonable supply of plastic balls will be available in the UK from mid-late July however we are keeping a watching brief and should there not be sufficient supply by then we will issue further guidance in particular with respect to the first two Grand Prix.

Table Tennis England expects and encourages increased use of the plastic ball as the supply becomes more available but recognises the practical difficulties during a transitional year. Therefore apart from the above competitions, it will allow those responsible for all other aspects of Competitive Table Tennis (as defined in Regulations) to choose either celluloid or plastic balls until July 1, 2015 when use of the plastic ball will become mandatory for all Competitive Table Tennis in England.

This topic will be discussed at the next League Management Committee meeting on Monday 30th June.

The Bedford & District Table Tennis League Annual General Meeting was held at Elstow TTC on Monday 16th June. It was a very well attended meeting with twenty seven club representatives. Rule propositions 1 & 2, which were put forward by the Management Committee, were passed unanimously which means that next season there will be no match postponements allowed except where a match has to be abandoned due to unavoidable circumstances. All other propositions did not receive the requisite number of votes required.

Bedford Community's Michael Fox was unanimously elected Vice Chairman as Ken Collins is retiring from the Management Committee and was duly presented with a present for his many year's of service to the League in a vast number of roles. Richard Lake and John Alsop were elected Vice Presidents and John also received the Doug Ayres Merit Award from Ken Collins for his contribution to the League as a player, coach and administrator.

Winners Civil Service A - Navdeep Kundra, Mark Conway, Paul Collins

Biggleswade (0) 372 Civil Service A (126) 394

This was a closely fought final involving the champions of Division Two this season, Civil Service A and Biggleswade who held top spot for a time in Division One before having to settle for the runners up position. Biggleswade, consisting of Nick Hart, Richard Steele and Tim Bliss, started the stronger only dropping two sets in the first five matches and were looking to be on course to better their league performance. Navdeep Kundra, Mark Conway and Paul Collins continued to give an excellent account of themselves by staying in touch and will certainly bring a lot to the top tier next season. Adam Nutland (Winner), Luke Walsh (Runner Up)

This season's second charity tournament, in remembrance of long time BDTTL player Brian Copperwheat, took place on Tuesday 8th April, courtesy of host Revolution TTC, at Church Lane Community Centre. Brian's daughter Nicola whose entire family play table tennis at a very high level meant that the tournament was at its highest standard in this reporter's memory. The Plate competition was won by Bedford Community's Martin Lewis (last year's main competition winner) who defeated Nicola's daughter Natasha 31-27, 31-24 off a six point advantage. The main competition was won by Natasha's boyfriend, England No. 25 senior Adam Nutland, who beat Natasha's seventeen year old brother Luke 31-29, 31-30 in a match of very high quality. Natasha's younger brother eleven year old Ethan, who is currently England's No. 4 Under 13, also lost to Adam in the semi-finals. Natasha's father Jimmy lost in the first round to Revolution's Chris Nicol 31-28, 31-19.

Thanks to Revolution TTC for hosting the event and to Chris and Michael Fox who provided refreshments during the evening with profits going to charity. Approximately 120 was raised during the evening from entries, the raffle and refreshments.

The Bedford & District Table Tennis League junior tournament had a good entry with seventeen players contesting the first junior tournament the league has held for several years. Positions in the initial groups decided which of the four divisions each player competed in for the second stage of the event. Matt Evans of Elstow TTC (pictured above) was the overall winner and new Junior champion. Click on this article's title for a photo gallery of the winners/runners-up.

All competitors are to be congratulated on their high standards in play, umpiring and sportsmanship, which ensured that the tournament was very pleasurable indeed! Thanks to Elstow TTC for hosting the event and to tournament assistant Barbara Wright for helping on the day with entering match results.
