Smith Cup & Plate Finals
Elstow TTC hosted tonight's Smith Cup & Plate finals and congratulations to Dave Beddall on his handicapping. The Smith Cup was won by Stevington B beating St Neots E by just 18 points. The Plate was an even closer affair with Modern F just pipping Southill E by 8 points. A full report will follow shortly. Many thanks to Elstow TTC for hosting the event and to Dave Beddall for organising this season's events so well where 50% of participants will be pleased with the organiser and 50% will wish the organiser otherwise!

Stevington were down to 2 players as they hosted St Neots A and the visitors left with an 8-2 victory. Dave Bridger bagged a brace for St Neots with Richard Bellamy and Roger Howard one singles each. Ben Thornber won both of his singles to secure Stevington's points. St Neots picked up their 8th point with a win for Bellamy and Bridger beating Day and Thornber in the doubles. Biggleswade and St Neots B completed their seasons this week with the visitors winning 6-4 thanks to a hat trick from Marek Mastalerczyk, a brace from Dave Bridger and a singleton from Jim Dodds. The latest Modern derby took place this week and the current league placings were reversed as the C team secured an 8-2 victory against the B team. There were hat tricks for Olivier Autin, who for the 2nd consecutive week didn't drop a set, and David Beddall, whilst Sahad Ahmed beat Nish Narayanan in straight sets. Modern B travelled to Elstow A and emphatically hit a perfect 10 with hat tricks for Paul Birch, Alex Meade and Olivier Autin. Birch and Meade beat Nowakoski and Oliver in the doubles. Modern C hosted St Neots B and just had the edge winning 6-4. Olivier Autin hit his 2nd hat trick of the week without dropping a set, David Beddall picked up a brace and Sahad Ahmed picked up his 2nd win in as many weeks beating Richard Bellamy in 5 sets. Terry Cardwell won 2 of his singles and Dave Bridger beat Sahad. Despite being 9-7 up in the 5th Beddall and Ahmed were pipped 11-9 in the doubles by Bridger and Cardwell. Stevington A hosted Modern C and the visitors secured an 8-2 victory with hat tricks from Imandeep Sehmbi and David Beddall. Imandeep came from 10-3 down in his 1st set against Ben Thornber to win 12-10 and take the next 2 sets. Sahad Ahmed picked up his 1st win against Richard Lake. Ben and Neville Moran both beat Sahad. Modern C secured a 7-3 victory at home against Elstow A with hat tricks from Olivier Autin and David Beddall. The pair teamed up to maintain their doubles record of only 1 defeat so far this season in winning Modern's 7th point. In the singles Tom Oliver had run Autin close going down 11-8 in the deciding set. Tom Nowakoski came back from a 2 sets deficit against Beddall only to be beaten in the 5th. Sahad Ahmed was unlucky not to pick up a win as he narrowly lost in 5 sets to both Oliver and Rob McPhee. Nowakoski beat Ahmed in straight sets. Click on the article title for more team reports ...

A strong St Neots A side beat Modern C who only had 2 players 8-2. Mick Harper bagged a brace, as did Adam Jepson including a closely fought 5 setter against Olivier Autin which he secured 13-11. Mirek Pazdzior, fresh from winning the Cambridge Veteran's singles title at the weekend, debuted for St Neots beating Olivier in 4 sets. David Beddall picked up a point for Modern coming back from 10-6 down to beat Mirek 12-10 in the deciding set. Modern B hosted Elstow A who could only field 2 players. Alex Meade bagged a brace for Modern with Paul Birch and Nish Narayanan picking up a win each against John Simms. Tom Oliver won2 singles to register Elstow's points by beating Nish 11-6 in the deciding set. He saved the performance of the night for his win against Paul in straight sets. St Neots A picked up a 7-3 win against Biggleswade although the shock result of the night was a straight sets win for Biggleswade's Harvey Cross over Shaun Murray. Harvey also beat Ollie Loia, as did Richard Steele to secure Biggleswade's points. Dave Rowell made his season's debut for St Neots and helped himself to a hat trick. St Neots B played hosts to Modern C and the visitors left with a 6-4 win. Modern's Olivier Autin continued his excellent run of hat tricks and this included some brilliant attacking topspin play in a win against Sandy Harper making her debut for St Neots this season. David Beddall bagged a brace but was well beaten in his singles by Harper in straight sets. Match of the night was Sahad Ahmed who once again came within a whisker of breaking his season's duck narrowly losing to Richard Bellamy in a deciding set. Sahad was also beaten by Sandy Harper and Jim Dodds. Modern once again clinched their victory in the last match of the night as Autin and Beddall made it 9 out of 9 for the season beating Bellamy and Dodds in the doubles. Modern C played hosts to Stevington A and kept up the pursuit of their B team with a 9-1 victory. Olivier Autin and David Beddall both hit hat tricks although the star of the night was undoubtedly Henry Simmons playing his 2nd match in the top flight this season. He picked up 2 points for Modern with some patient work in 5 set wins against Ben Thornber (8-11 14-12 15-13 7-11 14-12) and Neville Moran (11-8 15-17 8-11 11-6 11-5). Richard Lake managed to hold out against Henry in his other singles match but still needed 5 sets to secure a victory. The top 2 teams in the division met in a “Modern” derby this week and the defending champions strengthened their hold on the top spot with an 8-2 win. John Alsop and Keith McConnell picked up hat tricks, although Keith was forced to battle to the death in his singles match by Paul Birch holding on to win 15-13 in the 5th. Steve Silk bagged a brace but was beaten in 4 sets by Paul Birch. Paul then teamed up with Nish Narayanan to inflict the first defeat this season on John Alsop and Keith McConnell in the doubles.
