The Bedford & District Table Tennis League's first Charity Handicap Tournament took place on Tuesday 18th February at Church Lane Community Centre, courtesy of Revolution TTC and twenty three players turned up to see if they could secure their names on the trophies. It was a mixture of youth and experience that won the day as Kempston Boys Brigade's 15 year old Ed Simms won the main event, for the first time, defeating Bedford Community's Mick Beveridge 23-16, 23-16 in the final.

The Plate event saw last year's winner, Revolution's 14 year old Henry Simmons defeated by Civil Service's Ken Collins 23-21, 23-16, the first time he has won this event. Over £120 was raised for local charities and everyone appeared to have a good evening. Thanks to the Michael and Chris Fox catering team who provided refreshments throughout the evening and are donating the profits to the charity event. Bedfordshire completed their season of fixtures with the Junior team completing their last fixtures at Westfield TTC in Wellingborough in Division 1A. Despite an excellent win by Josh Robinson over England No. 13 Alec Ward from Cleveland and another against their No. 2 Billy Forster, the eventual division winners won the match 8-2. A draw against Cheshire 1 in their next match was not enough with subsequent losses against South Yorkshire (2-8) and Shropshire (3-7) resulting in relegation. Josh achieved 62.5% wins, Isaac Beevor 50% wins and Alex Meade 37.5% wins.

Due to the unavailability of the regular Bedfordshire girls, 11 year old Rebekah Barry, who plays for Southill E in the 5th Division, stepped in to help. Showing no sign of nerves when playing girls of 15 years and older, including the England No. 11 junior, she gave a very good account of herself. She won 6 points in one game against the England No. 38, Eleanor Davidson from Cleveland and just lost one game 12-14 against the Shropshire No.2, Tong Melody Zheng. Well done Rebekah!

How Fast Are You?
A once in a lifetime opportunity for a unique Bedford sports club challenge

From the 3rd – 9th August 2012 (inclusive) Bedford International Athletic Stadium will become an Olympic LIVE site. They will be showing free LIVE Olympic coverage on a giant screen outside at the facility to members of the public.

The Mayor will be officially opening the LIVE site at around 7.00pm on Friday 3rd August and they are arranging a special 100m sports challenge sprint (Men’s & Women’s event) to celebrate the opening of this week of activity.

They also want local Bedford sports clubs to send a representative from their sport for this “one off” fun event. This is an exciting chance to run 100m on the same surface to the 2012 Olympic sprinters and to be part of our once in a lifetime celebrations.

Do you want to represent Bedford & District Table Tennis League at this unique event? If so, then please contact John Alsop on 01234 783194 for further details.

Why not just come down with friends; enjoy live screen action with a drink and some food and try some of the other sports on offer.
