Top Class Evening
Westfield Table Tennis Club hosted an excellent evening of top class table tennis on Friday, 20th June, at Wellingborough. Former England No. 1 Desmond Douglas was accompanied by Commonwealth Silver medallist and current England No. 3 Andrew Rushton, England No. 2 lady Kelly Sibley and England No. 5 Junior Chris Doran. Local Bedford based 13 year old Josh Robinson from Bedford Modern had the opportunity of testing his skills against former World No. 7, Desmond Douglas, and was not overawed by the occasion making a number of winning shots against the former champion (pictured to the right).

The Dunlop Masters is to be held at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time in over 3 decades. Jan-Ove Waldner probably the greatest player of modern times replaces Timo Boll through injury and the event is being televised live on SKY SPORTS 1 between 7.30pm and 10.30pm on Monday 17th March

Elstow in shock win!
Last night the Elstow posse went on a club rampage to play our annual fixture against a team from Buckinghamshire, Mursley. The event has been played for a total of five years now and in the last couple has been known as the Keith Pearson Memorial Cup in memory of the Elstow TTC club founder who sadly passed away at the start of last season.

TT on Blue Peter - Tue 4th March at 4.35pm

Gethin Jones the Blue Peter presenter will brush up on his table tennis skills live on Tuesday. Tin-Tin Ho ranked number 2 in the U13 girls catagory and Zac Zilesnick ranked number 1 in U13 boys, will show of some of their skills as well as teaching Gethin some of the finer points of playing (such as how to hold the racket). The young duo will then challenge him to a game of multi ball.

The programme will be going out live on Tuesday 4th on BBC1 at 4:35, so make sure to tune in. If you miss it, you should be able to watch it again online via the BBC I player.

North Herts Satellite Grand Prix 8/9th March

North Herts are again running a Satellite Grand Prix on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March. This ETTA ranking event is the closest for BDTTL players wanting to improve their England ranking.

Beds Veterans In Superb Form

The Bedfordshire Veteran's team of Sandy Harper, Steve Dobbins, John Alsop and Harvey Cross had a successful completion to their final weekend held in Halifax coming 4th overall behind winners Norfolk 1, runners-up Yorkshire 3 and the third placed Northants 1st team.

St Neots Veterans Make It At Long Last
After five years workng their way from the lowest division in the Veteran's British League the St Neots team of Chris Rogers, Stuart Palmer, Keith Richardson and Mick Harper romped away with the Men's Division 1B title by 6 clear points to second placed Tameside.

At least St Neots did finally drop a point or three to be more exact, in five years on their trek to the Premier Division, these three points are the only ones St Neots have dropped! Next season they should find it somewhat tougher in the Premier Division.

Dolly Harmer RIP (1919 - 2008)

After a mercifully short illness, Dolly Harmer died of cancer on 20 January 2008, aged 88. She was a lifelong devotee of table tennis, and taught the game to so many children that many people in Leighton Buzzard refer to her as “Mrs Table Tennis”.

Forde's County Debut
Stevington's Dave Forde debuted for Beds II team at the weekend and won his first singles match 11-6, 12-10, 8-11, 11-13, 12-10 against Herts VI No. 3 Brian Gale after recovering from 6-10 down in the second set to win the next 6 points and the set.

Beds II won the match 8-2 and now lie second in Division 4B

Dolly Harmer of the Leighton Buzzard League, Honorary Life Member and Vice President of Bedfordshire County Table Tennis Association and County Umpire sadly passed away during the night at Orchard Lodge Care Home, Tilsworth. She had been in her usual lively spirits earlier in the week, despite suffering from inoperable cancer, when visited by County Chairman Peter Clarke. Despite her advanced age of 88, Dolly, a former teacher, retained a keen interest in table tennis and her lively personality will be missed by all those who knew her.

The Bedford & District Table Tennis League send their sincere condolences and best wishes to her family and friends.

British League - Sat 8th Dec
Bedford Modern II Falter At The First Hurdle

Bedford Modern II started the second weekend in last place in Division 2 South and Midlands with a team of John Camilleri, Steve Silk, John Alsop and Richard Elliott. Their first match on Saturday was against the Division leaders Kingfisher and despite a maximum 2 wins from Elliott and a single from Steve Silk they narrowly lost 5-3 and remained in last place.
