BDTTL League & General Table Tennis News

Further to the posting of the divisional structure for 2018/2019, it is felt that some explanation may be required. As informed at the Annual General Meeting there were 45 teams entered for next season a reduction of two teams from last season. Three options for a divisional structure were reviewed by the League Committee: 6 divisions (3x8, 3x7)); 5 divisions (2x11, 2x8, 1x7); and 4 divisions (1x12, 3x11). The Committee voted unanimously for a 4 division structure. The main factors influencing this decision were:
1. It maximises the number of matches played by teams in all divisions within the constraints imposed by the length of the season.
2. It provides a larger number and variety of opponents for each team within all divisions.
3. Because teams will only play each other twice and not three times, it evens up the home/away fixtures to 1 home and 1 away instead of the imbalance (2 to 1) that we have had in recent years.

I hope that all teams will see the advantages of this structure and will enjoy the coming season.

The season will start on 10 September 2018. A fixtures schedule will be posted on the web shortly.

Please do not forget to renew your Table Tennis England membership before playing any League matches.

(L. to R. Najam Sheraz, Phil Crossley, Tim Thomas, Dave Beddall - League Chairman)

Congratulations to Phoenix C team comprising of Najam Sheraz, Phil Crossley and Tim Thomas who narrowly defeated the Elstow A team comprising Tom Nowakowski, Colin Luscombe and John Simms by just 8 points in the Smith Cup final, held on Monday 30th April at Elstow TTC. Phoenix's Tim Thomas managed to secure the win in a close battle against Colin Luscombe in the final match. Further details will be posted in the next few days.

Elstow D won the Plate final by default as Revolution I could, unfortunately, field only two players due to a last minute team player illness.

Results have now been received for all the quarter final matches of the Smith Cup & Plate competitions and can be accessed via the drop down menu on the left. Six of the eight matches were played within an eighteen points winning margin with the closest match between Elstow F v Elstow D where the latter won by just five points. The final match of this encounter was between 11 year old Freya Opperman and the vastly more experienced Kerr Clement. Despite the vast difference in experience Freya only just lost -9, 8, -8, -3 giving their higher ranked team the match all determined on the last game. A very credible achievement to the handicapper, Elstow's Dave Thomas, who knew the two teams very well. Elstow D's Mark White caused the most damage for the higher ranked team and Freya Opperman was the star performer for the F team which included an 8, 10, 10, -3 win against Patrick Lyall and an -7, -4, -0, -5 loss against Mark White.

Elstow TTC have put together a 2018 calendar in aid of the Parkinson's UK charity. All profits from the sale of the £10 calendar will go to this very worthwhile charity which Elstow TTC have been supporting through many fundraising events during the last year. Please contact Simon Collier on 07962 420268 to get yours now. I'm sorry to disappoint/relieve you to confirm the calendar photo shots are in the best possible taste.

A few issues have arisen with emailing results cards some of which were also experienced last season. When emailing the results card could you 1). have a meaningful subject to the email such as "Revolution B v St Neots A 161017 Result" rather than just "Results" 2). please email BOTH the Divisional Administrator and the Fixture Secretary 3). when emailing the Divisional Administrator use the generic email address divN@bedfordttleague.co.uk where N is the division number e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6. DO NOT use the divisional administrators personal email address. Thank you for your attention to this matter and please inform your other team members. Following these guidelines will ensure a smooth and prompt results publication service.

Since the introduction of the new score card for this season the Fixture Secretary has been experiencing problems which require the new score card to be revised to make the Fixture Secretary's life much easier, bearing in mind the large number of cards he needs to review on a weekly basis. This new revised score card can be downloaded by clicking on this article or clicking on Scorecard in the Downloads section on the left hand side menu. As previously advised, there are a number of old score cards lying around from last season and it has been agreed with the Fixture Secretary that these should be used up prior to moving to the newer score card.

This season has seen an unprecedented increase in the number of score cards that are being submitted without team names. Other issues experienced have been teams entering just christian names. This all adds to the work of the volunteer administrators and fixture secretary. If you wish to keep the goodwill of these people and continue to have a responsive results service then please complete the score cards correctly. Sanctions against offending teams are not currently under discussion by the committee but if standards continue to drop then this will have to be reviewed. In addition, the quality of the images sent electronically has generally been poor. Images should be at least 1024 pixels wide and taken in good lighting conditions i.e. on the match table top without shadows and in focus. Thank you for your assistance in helping the league run efficiently and professionally albeit by amateur volunteers.

John Alsop
General Secretary
